Activities and entertainment on the island
Corfu really is an emerald island and remains
verdant throughout the summer, unlike the more arid Aegean. When driving through the inland
settlements you discover the real Greece. Villagers sit chatting outside cafès and you can buy
their home-produced herbs, olives, wine and honey.
Watersports are easily arranged and there are scuba-diving facilities nearby for beginners and
more experienced divers. The golf course designed by Donald Harradine is situated in Ropa Valley
just 30 minutes drive away. Greece is not famous for its sophisticated cuisine but there are
numerous good tavernas with interesting locations. Strinilas, situated in the mountains of
northern Corfù has a taverna marked by an enormous elm tree. Delicious local specialities are
served with chilled home-made wine. Many tavernas such as Agni and Kouloura are owned by fishermen
and you can enjoy the day's catch sitting by the harbour or adjacent to the water's edge. There is
an excellent Italian restaurant at Kato Korakiana.
